The Grilled Cheese Test
Just to be extra thorough in this taste test, we fired up the stove and made some grilled cheese sandwiches to test the melting capabilities of each brand of American cheese. No one likes an unmelted rubbery slice on their grilled cheese sandwich, after all, so we wanted to make sure that the Aldi brand wouldnt let us down during this test. We made the sandwiches the classic way, with a pad of butter and white bread in a skillet on the stovetop. We loaded up each sandwich with a whopping three slices of cheese. We understand that such an amount might be a bit much for some people, but we really wanted to see what level of ooey-gooey melty cheesiness we could get out of both the Kraft and Aldi cheeses.
The first sandwich was made with the Kraft American singles, which melted as expected, with a lovely little stretch as we pulled the sandwich halves apart. The next sandwich was then made with the Happy Farms American singles. It took slightly longer to get the sandwich to the ideal melty stage about another minute on the skillet, all told but the result was equally gooey and satisfying. All of the minor flavor differences we noticed during the other methods of tasting still applied when eating the grilled cheese sandwiches. The Kraft singles were ever so slightly cheesier, while the Aldi brand singles were a touch creamier.

Cottage cheese is a good alternative for dogs with lactose intolerances.

Cracker Barrel Cheese Is Bold And Versatile
Well admit that we were surprised when biting into the first slice off the block of Cracker Barrel Aged Reserved Cheddar. Could this possibly be made by the same Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and restaurants found near interstate exits all across America? It turns out that no, there is no affiliation, and the cheese brand is actually owned by Kraft Foods, which has been producing it since 1954.
Once we cleared that up, it started to make sense that Kraft was saving its higher-end cheeses for its higher-end cheese line. The line of Cracker Barrel cheese bars has about a dozen different flavors, including several cheddars, gouda, asiago, and Swiss. They also produce macaroni and cheese, sliced and shredded cheeses, as well as spreads and snacks, but some of those products were harder for us to find in stores.
The bars are clearly created with the intention of slicing and serving as a cheese course. The Cracker Barrel website even offers cheese pairings for those interested in making their own arrangements. While not the worlds most exclusive cheese, we like that theyre accessible, crowd-friendly, and enjoy the textures and bold flavors of the cheeses. Horizon Organic American Singles
I always want to like the organic, better quality option in these taste testsnot to validate my own palate, but because I want so badly for food manufacturer marketing to live up to its advertised promises. I want to not feel bamboozled by health halos and instead, be delighted by a real one. So my expectations for Horizon Organicone of the leaders in pioneering organic dairy, a partner in the creation of the USDAs national programwere high.
Unfortunately, they did not meet them, no thanks to a new recipe released just earlier this year. And apparently, I wasnt the only one let downit earned less than 1.5 stars on their own website by users begging for the old recipe back.
Cold, this is a harder, stiffer cheese than its competitors. It bites like a thin-sliced cheddar, but without the sharp, distinctive flavoror much flavor at all, really. It had barely any salt, but then left a vaguely milky aftertaste that wasnt there while you were powering through the dry bite. This was also the poorest melter of the batch. When left to do so on its own, it ended with a chalky granularity akin to shredded cheeses cut with too much dehydrating cellulose. It was stubbornly slow to melt until nuked too, which revealed some creaminess and mildly warm flavor. But like a carrot on a stick, this pleasure was quickly taken away as it cooled quickly, drying out fast into a waxy coat far from ideal.
