Kids Vs. Science: Making The Greatest Grilled Cheese

Avoid mould-ripened soft-cheeses. Such as brie, camembert, ripened goats milk cheese and soft blue-veined cheese. Also Roquefort or Gorgonzola for babies and young children, as there is a higher chance that these may contain a bacteria called listeria.

Additionally, cheeses made from unpasteurised milk also have a higher chance of containing listeria. These should be avoided as well. You can check the packaging to see whether the cheese is made using pasteurised or unpasteurised milk. Most supermarket varieties are pasteurised.

However, all these cheeses soft cheeses, blue veined and unpasteurised, can be used in cooking. They are safe to offer to babies if they are thoroughly cooked through.

Is Cheddar Cheese A Common Allergen

Yes. Cheddar cheese is made from cows milk, and cows milk is a common food allergen in young children, accounting for about one-fifth of all childhood food allergies.13 Research shows that the majority of children with cows milk allergy will outgrow it by age 6 and many babies with milder symptoms of milk protein allergy are able to successfully reintroduce cows milk as early as their first birthday, with the guidance of their doctors.1415

For those with children who are lactose intolerant, good news: cheddar cheese is usually tolerated by those with lactose intolerance, as it has low lactose content.16 17 However, aged cheeses often contain histamines, which may cause mild rashes in children who are sensitive to them.18

If you have a strong family history of milk allergy or suspect your baby may be allergic to dairy products, consult an allergist before introducing cheese of any kind. As with all allergens, start by serving a scant quantity on its own for the first couple of times, and if there is no adverse reaction, gradually increase the quantity over future servings.

Whole Nuts And Peanuts

Whole nuts and peanuts should not be given to children under 5 years old, as they can choke on them.

You can give your baby nuts and peanuts from around 6 months old, as long as they’re crushed, ground or a smooth nut or peanut butter.

If there’s a history of food allergies or other allergies in your family, talk to your GP or health visitor before introducing nuts and peanuts.

Precautions To Take While Feeding Cheese To Babies

Like with any other new food that you introduce your baby to, cheese also carries a risk of allergy. Check out these precautions before you start:

  • Observe carefully
  • An allergic reaction can start as early as 20 minutes or within the first few hours. Look for symptoms such as swollen lips, redness in the eyes and face, and rashes on the skin these are indicators of an allergic reaction. If your baby is lactose intolerant, you might see him experiencing gastric issues, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea.

    2. Consult the paediatrician

If your baby is known to have allergies to dairy products or has eczema or asthma, talk to the paediatrician about feeding cheese and only do it if they permit.

    3. Try different cheeses

You baby might develop a taste for one cheese and dislike the others. Therefore, if he doesnt like any of the cheeses that youre giving him, all is not lost. Keep trying different varieties of cheese.

Children should have some dairy products every day. Milk, cheese and yoghurt give your child protein and calcium. Calcium helps build strong bones and teeth.

From birth to around 4 to 6 months, babies should only have breastmilk or formula. At around 6 months, you can start to introduce solid foods. Until the age of 2, children should have full-cream milk. Reduced fat dairy is then recommended for children over the age of 2.

Milk provides protein, vitamins and calcium. Soy beverages with added calcium can be used instead of milk for children over 1 year of age. Some nut or oat milks may have added calcium but they lack vitamin B12 and sufficient protein, so check your childs total diet with a doctor or qualified dietitian before using them.

    When Can Babies Have Cheese

Most babies are ready to start solids sometime around 6 months. Dairy is a common allergen, so it shouldnt be the very first item on your new eaters menu. But you dont have to hold off too long before introducing cheese either. Once your baby has tried and tolerated several less-allergenic foods experts say it’s okay to move onto more common allergens like dairy, including cheese.

Since cheese lends itself to being eaten as a finger food, aim to introduce it between 6 and 8 months, when your child is more capable of self-feeding. While experts used to think that introducing allergenic foods later reduced the risk for reactions, the American Academy of Pediatrics now says theres no reason to wait. In fact, waiting too long to serve dairy-based foods like cheese might raise a childs allergy risk.

Start with options that are soft and or easily shreddable, which are easier to gum and pose less of a choking hazard.

If cheese is the first dairy-based food you serve, plan for your babys first introduction to happen at home . Thatll make it easier to keep an eye on him for the first hour or two after eating so you can watch for any potential allergic reactions. Youll also know for sure about all of the ingredients he ate at mealtime, making it easier to pinpoint cheese as the culprit if theres a problem.

    Unsafe Cheeses For Baby

Some varieties of cheese include mold-ripened soft cheese, blue-veined cheese, unpasteurized cheese, processed cheese, imported cheese to be avoided for baby at least till one year as it may contain listeria, the food poisoning bacteria. That may pose a food poisoning risk and leads to fatal foodborne illness.

Hard chunks of cheese, stringy, melted cheese can also be a choking hazard for babies. So always give cheese in a soft buttery form to babies. Here is the list of unsafe cheeses to be avoided until one year.
