What Will The Us Government Do With 14 Billion Pounds Of Cheese

The United States’ dairy surplus has reached a record high, rounding out at 1.4 billion pounds of cheese. Reports attempting to quantify this astonishing amount have deferred to metrics like “enough to wrap around the U.S. Capitol.” Suffice to say, nobody’s suggesting we could consume it all.

The nation eating this much cheese is not only mind-boggling: It’s growing less and less likely. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture data, Americans have cut their milk consumption down from 35 pounds to an average of 15 per person annually. The excess is turned into cheese for storage and longevity . At the same time, government subsidies have continued to support dairy production, buying up surplus to keep prices steady. That leaves us with more cheese than anyone, even the experts, knows what to do with.

“What has changedand changed fairly noticeably and fairly recentlyis people are turning away from processed cheese,” Cornell University agriculture economist Andrew Novakovic said in an interview with NPR. “It’s the same as it is for everything else: If you’ve got too much of something, the price has to go down until consumption rises.”

In the past, the U.S. government has supported dairy farmers through various programs and agencies, accumulating a staggering surplus with policies unique to this industry. What it’s done with that surplus has changed the American welfare state and diet forever.

Why Is Goat Milk Not Considered Dairy

Goat milk is real dairy. All mammalian milk is considered dairy but there are differences in butterfat content, lactose, and protein. That is why some people that are allergic to cow dairy or lactose sensitive to cow dairy can use goat dairy successfully and enjoy the many goat dairy products available**.

Nutritional Value And Flavor

Government Cheese / Government Cheese The Good Old Days ...

Government cheese has become a symbol for American innovation and industrialization, but the nutritional value of the cheese has been in question. It has been argued that people in poverty, such as those entitled to government cheese, are more likely to become obese. Between 1988 and 1994, those individuals below the poverty line had an obesity rate of 29.2 percent. The Food Security Act of 1985 attempted to reduce milk production, but has been labeled as a “hodgepodge of misdirected political compromise.”

The nutrition facts on government cheese suggests a serving size of 1 ounce , or two slices, of cheese per serving. It also notes that the nutritional information represents the average nutritional value of “Processed American cheese” which was offered by the commodity food program. Per serving, the total fat content is 9 g, of which 6 g are saturated fat. Per serving, there are 30 mg of cholesterol and 380 mg of sodium.

The flavor of government cheese has been compared as ranging from mild cheddar to Velveeta cheese due to variations in ingredients. Some people reminisces both good or bad opinions concerning the flavor of government cheese. A meme sometimes used to show you came from certain socioeconomic classes is to say “I liked the government cheese.”

Is There Anywhere I Can Buy Us Government Cheese

My grandmother used to get it in Nebraska until she passed away and my mother would sometimes bring extra back home here in Missouri.

Anyway, it’s made by Land O’Lakes and it’s on the government’s Commodity Food Service.

I went to college in Wisconsin in the late 80’s and during that time the state gave away cheese to people on welfare. Some friends of mine had some and I I remember it was a lot of cheese that came packaged in a box kinda like velveeta is packaged in only much larger. They told me that they had to wait in a really long line to pick it up. I don’t know if the program is still active at this point.

From the article /u/escapefromtexas posted: “Once the dairy program was pulled and the food stamp program switched over to Link cards, Government Cheese was taken off the market.”

is that a brand name cheese? or cheese from the us government?

Cheese from the US Government, but I believe it’s been discontinued in favor of other programs like TANF and SNAP. Until the 90s or so, the government would buy and stockpile cheese to support/prop up the dairy industry, then they’d process that cheese into “government cheese” which was distributed to the poor. It was somewhat similar to Velveeta but would be made with random cheeses so the taste varied.

If you get upset when conservatives complain about Obama’s socialized healthcare, just remind them that Reagan socialized cheese.

James L. Kraft of Illinois patented a manufacturing process in 1916 that allowed for mass production of his famous orange cheese “product”. Containing a mixture of colby and cheddar with curds and emulsifiers, the Kraft company’s almost-cheese became enormously popular during the first half of the 20th century. It was cheap, shipped easily, and had a ridiculously long shelf life. Processed cheesewhich eventually came to be called, simply, ‘American’ cheesebecame a staple of the 20th century American diet.

Meanwhile, as part of price support programs for farmers enacted in the 30s, the United States government began to stockpile dairy products. By the 80s, the stockpiles were so large that merely storing them became prohibitively expensive. The government even paid dairy farmers not to produce any dairy for five years, buying the farmers’ cattle herds. The cheese would have eventually spoiled without any outlets, and there was no more space to store it. In 1981, the Reagan administration decided to distribute free processed cheese to America’s poor under the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program.

Let Them Eat Cheese: How Vulnerable Populations Pay For The Us Cheese Surplus

One hundred feet underground, temperatures normally hover around 58 degrees Fahrenheit. In this man-made cave, however, its a cool 36. An elaborate system of pumps runs a steady stream of coolants from aboveground to protect the buried inventory. Thousands of red, orange, and yellow barrels line the floor like an industrial sunset, each oversized trashcan weighing 680 pounds and filled to the brim with dairy. These limestone caves in Springfield, Missouri are home to the United States largest stockpile of its 1.2 billion-pound surplus of cheese, built up through subsidies by the US government. Purging this excess cheese has been a problem for the United States government since the Great Depression, and the primary solution to this long-standing problem has been fairly consistent: feed the cheese to the poor.

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan signed a farm bill that released 30 million pounds of processed cheese for states to give to low-income residents. The cheese was distributed to people on welfare, food stamps, and Social Security through the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program until the 1990s. This program birthed the term government cheese, and despite the 1981 farm bills attempt to bite into the 2-billion-pound cheese surplus, the 30 million pounds of cheese it released barely made a dent in the stockpile.

Government cheese? What to do with this new stimulus check!

When I was little we did not receive welfare. My mother worked a job where she made less than she would take in if she accepted welfare. She simply refused to accept welfare. She worked nonstop to bring money, food and cloths home for us. It was very important to her that my sister and I saw her working. She thought it would be an important lesson. She was also obsessed with us looking clean and kept. I remember always being told not to dirty myself because we had to ride the bus home after a day out and about. We did not have much, but that was no excuse for us looking unkempt.

Government Cheese was very popular. It was the color of orange that could only be found in that box. The box itself was a slick and simple design. It was a staple in every home. The kids made fun of you for having it, but we all had it. It was the best cheese for macaroni and cheese. It was also great for a grilled cheese sandwich. Sometimes you could open the fridge and just slice off a chunk and be very happy.

The Government Cheese Phenomenon And The American Cheese Stockpile Today

The U.S. has too much cheese 1.4 billion pounds of it to be exact.

To get some of that cheese off the market, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has spent $47.1 million buying up roughly 22 million pounds of it since 2016, according to a USDA spokesperson.

But this isn’t the first time the government has bought tons of American cheese. In the 1970s, the USDA stepped in to help control volatile milk prices, and it became very profitable to produce milk. So, farmers started producing way too much of it, which was then turned into way too much cheese.

In 1981, then-President Ronald Reagan declared 30 million pounds of American cheese would be distributed to food pantries, school lunch programs and other welfare programs. By 1984, the U.S. was storing about 5 pounds of cheese for every American.

“People talk about food assistance programs as if they were created to help poor people out,” said Andrew Novakovic, professor of agricultural economics at Cornell University. “Yes that’s true, but almost all of the major food assistance programs were ideas that came from agriculture because we had too much of something.”

Suddenly a block of surplus dairy product became a neatly packaged symbol of economic status known as “government cheese.” It’s been referenced in “SNL” sketches and songs by artists including DMX, Kendrick Lamar, The Roots and Jay Z.

Research The Types Of Govt Contracts Available:

Before registering on the government databases, you should research what types of contracts you may bid on. Small businesses may bid on set-aside contracts.

There are 2 types of contracts. You might be eligible for bidding on competitive set-asides and sole-source set-asides contracts. The first type applies when more than one small business can perform the job.

Competitive set-asides are also applied automatically when the government contract is for 150,000 dollars or less. In contrast, sole-source set-asides are contracts where only one company may meet the requirements.

These contracts are issued without any competitive bidding. You may consider getting your business certified as a veteran, minority, women-owned or any other applicable business certification. These certifications might give your business an advantage in the bidding process.

As officials scrambled behind the scenes to figure out how to deal with the cheese, the cheesy conundrum became public when Agriculture Secretary John R. Block showed up at a White House event with a five-pound block of greening, moldy cheese and showed it to the press. Weve got 60 million of these that the government owns, he said. Its moldy, its deteriorating we cant find a market for it, we cant sell it, and were looking to try to give some of it away.

As the public got wind of the existence of all that surplus cheese, it began to sharply criticize President Ronald Reagan. He had been elected in part by bandying about inaccurate stereotypes of welfare queens and poor people who gamed the system, and earlier in 1981 had pledged to reduce the federal food stamp program. There were hungry Americans still suffering from the aftereffects of the recession. Why not give them the cheese?

In December 1981, Reagan relented. At a time when American families are under increasing financial pressure, their government cannot sit by and watch millions of pounds of food turn to waste, he said in a public address. As a result, he said, hed free 30 million pounds of cheese from the countrys stockpile. He created the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program, which began handing out the blocks of processed cheese to the elderly, low-income people and organizations that served them.

How The Us Ended Up With Warehouses Full Of ‘government Cheese’

What happened to government Cheese? – (MSJ) MAIN STREET JOURNAL DIGITAL NEWSPAPER

If youve ever tasted whats known as government cheese, you wont soon forget it. Its flavor was described as somewhere between Velveeta and American cheese and smacked of humiliation or gratitude for the people who couldnt afford not to eat it. Its color, a pale orange, was eye-catching. And it came in iconic stacks of five-pound blocks that made it immediately clear it wasnt your standard cheddar or Camembert.

The cheese, distributed by a federal program during a time of volatile milk production in the 1980s recession, is iconic to this day, forming fraught memories among those who had to eat it and those who never got a taste.

The cheesy story all started in 1949, when the Agricultural Act of 1949 gave the Commodity Credit Corporation, a government-owned corporation dedicated to stabilizing farm incomes, the authority to purchase dairy products like cheese from farmers. The CCC had been around since the Great Depression, when it was created as part of the New Deals attempt to stabilize prices and help farmers.
