Can You Freeze Mac And Cheese
Yes. Regardless of the preparation type, macaroni and cheese can be frozen. Due to its high dairy content, careful precaution needs to be taken to ensure it remains safe to eat and keeps its appetizing texture upon defrosting.
To prevent mac and cheese from flavor or textural changes in the freezer, it is important to protect the dish from freezer burn. Keep the temperature consistent throughout the length of the storage period.
Problems you could have if you do not prepare the dish properly for freezing, include soggy pasta, secretion of watery liquids, or a dry end product. Below, you will find out exactly how to go about freezing your mac and cheese for an on-hand comforting cheesy meal at any time.
For Those Who Want Value: Kirkland Signature Mac And Cheese
Kirklands Mac and Cheese is one of the richest and decadent ones we have tried from a big box shop. With 2.5 pounds worth of cheesy goodness for under $12, this is a good deal. The 40-60 minute cook time is much longer than regular boxed mac and cheese, but its well worth the wait.
While plating it, you can see the strings of melty cheese which tells us that they dont skimp on the cheese! This version most closely resembles and tastes like a friend made it for us from scratch. The cavatappi which is a corkscrew-shaped pasta is a bit overcooked, but its to be expected like most store-bought mac and cheese. If you broil it at the end, the cheese on top forms a crunchy and crispy browned topping, making it taste and look even better.
One thing to note: While this is great for larger groups or for feeding several kids, the high-calorie count makes it difficult for someone single to get through this as it has 10 servings.

Banza Elbows & Classic Cheddar
We’ve already talked about the sin of trying to make mac and cheese healthy, so it’s not a surprise that Banza Elbows & Classic Cheddar is next on the chopping block. It’s made with chickpea pasta, which is what sets it apart from its bleached-flour cousins. The cheese is a “classic cheddar,” which is likely an attempt to equate it with more classic mac and cheese options like Kraft. Now, chickpea pasta can be delicious, but is it really the best type of pasta for mac and cheese? Judging by Banza’s recipe, no. But while the flavor of the pasta is lacking, the texture of it isn’t bad.
However, there is one caveat. Not everyone can enjoy a gluten-heavy mac and cheese without feeling awful . This chickpea pasta is gluten-free, so it is a good option if you’re missing the mac and cheese of your childhood. And to be fair, we’d rather have this chickpea pasta than whole wheat pasta any day.
Do You Thaw Frozen Pasta Before Cooking
Dont defrost before you cook the pasta simply drop the frozen pieces into boiling water. When you cook frozen pasta, always use an additional quart of water so the temperature does not drop when the pasta is added. If the water takes too long to return to a boil, the pasta will stick together in the pot.

Trader Joe’s Pepperoni Pizza Mac & Cheese Bowl
Trader Joes Pepperoni Pizza Mac & Cheese is a great tasting pizza alternative. It has the usual nice and soft macaroni and awesome pizza flavor. I was disappointed with the lack of cheese in this one though.
Its accurate for cheese on a pizza because most places tend to lack on that aspect. For a mac and cheese, youd expect more cheese right? Regardless, this is still a tasteful food product. Read more about this mac and cheese in my full review.
Velveeta Shells And Cheese
The blue Kraft box may be the most well-known boxed mac and cheese product, but if you ate a lot of mac and cheese growing up, you probably had some Velveeta Shells and Cheese in your pantry from time to time as well. The original flavor is the most well-known, but the company has now expanded to include all kinds of flavors, like bacon, queso blanco, and even broccoli. But none of those add-ins can overpower the flavor and texture of the bright-yellow Velveeta.
It may come as a surprise, but Velveeta was once seen as a healthy product to feed to your family. Consumers loved the velvety texture of the highly processed cheese, but they also loved that it provided them with an inexpensive way to feed the people in their households. These days, we know better than to think these shells and “cheese” are healthy, but we’ve never quite gotten over that silky smooth texture that makes every bite feel like a warm hug.

Simply Nature Organic Macaroni & Cheese
Perhaps the best word to describe Simply Nature Organic Macaroni & Cheese from Aldi is … neutral. It’s definitely not bad, but it’s not exactly packed with flavor either. Like many of Aldi’s products, it’s a relatively obvious rip-off of the standard Kraft Original, but the “cheese” might be slightly sharper in this iteration of the boxed classic. Make it for your kids, and they’re probably going to gobble it up. Adults, we won’t judge if you eat it straight from the pot after a long day of work when you just can’t be bothered to make a real meal. But you’re not going to convince anyone it didn’t come out of a box from a budget store, even with the most elaborate upgrades and enhancements. If you’re already at Aldi, you shouldn’t turn it down if you’re craving mac and cheese. But we wouldn’t go out of our way for it.

- Aluminum foil
Pour water into a stock pot, add a dash of salt, and bring it to a boil over high heat before adding the macaroni pasta.
Cook it for two minutes less than the package recommends, drain it in the kitchen sink with cold water to stop the macaroni noodles from cooking, and pour them back into the pot.
Melt six tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan or pot over medium heat and then whisk in the flour for one minute. Add the milk, cayenne pepper, ground nutmeg, and two teaspoons of salt.
Bring it to a simmer while whisking for two to three minutes, and then blend in the cheddar and Parmesan cheese. If your Parm cheese has expired you may wonder how long does Parmesan cheese last after the expiration date? Smell it and taste a little to be sure its okay for this recipe.
Pour the cheesy sauce on the noodles and stir to coat the pasta. Divide the mac and cheese between baking dishes and set them aside to cool completely. Melt a couple of tablespoons of butter in a pan, add the breadcrumbs, and then sprinkle it over the pasta with a dash of black pepper.
Wrap each dish in plastic wrap and heavy-duty foil to prevent freezer burn and freeze the cheesy pasta for up to three months.

Best Almost Homemade: Cracker Barrel
Coming up next in our rankings was Cracker Barrels sharp cheddar macaroni and cheese. Peeking at the package post-testing, this brand sets itself apart from the others with its box. The black box made this brand seem more sophisticated, like this mac and cheese was designed for grown-ups. Caught you craving Cracker Barrel? Check out these copycat recipes.
When it came to taste, we definitely agreed that this macaroni was just a bit more refined than the other brands we tested. The sauce was paler and less artificial looking . The flavor was also more distinctively cheddar rather than just being some sort of generic cheese flavor. However, what we loved most about Cracker Barrel was the noodles. The large, ridged macaroni noodles were just right for holding onto the cheesy sauce.
Due to its more authentic flavors, we thought that this brand would be a good homemade substituteespecially if you dressed it up with some bacon, onions or even crispy breadcrumbs on top.

Best way to heat up thawed mac and cheese
The best way to heat up frozen mac and cheese is to allow it to thaw out first. Then, you can heat up previously frozen, now thawed out, mac and cheese in the microwave, the stove-top, and in the oven. In the oven: place thawed mac and cheese in an oven-safe dish.
How To Freeze Cooked Macaroni And Cheese
Step 1: Cool Completely
Leaving your warm mac and cheese at room temperature for too long places it at risk for harmful bacterial growth. The safest way to cool your warm mac and cheese dish is by placing it in an ice bath.
Pour ice water into a flat pan or dish which is wider than the mac and cheese serving dish. Fill it only one-third of the way with water and a few ice cubes. Place your macaroni dish in the ice bath so that the base is surrounded by the ice water and cools down quickly.
Leave the dish in the ice bath for at least 5 minutes, until cool to touch or near room temperature. Dont ever place mac and cheese that is still warm in the freezer. The steam forms ice-crystals which will ruin the texture of the dish once thawed.
Step 2: Portion
If you are freezing the dish in its entirety, skip this step and go straight to step 3. Portion the mac and cheese into individual servings so that you do not have to defrost the entire batch at once and can take out just as much as you need at a time.
Step 3: Wrap and Seal
For smaller portions, scoop each portion into a resealable freezer bag. Lie the bag flat and press out all the air before sealing.
If you are freezing an entire casserole, make sure the dish you have baked your macaroni and cheese in is freezer-friendly. Cover the whole dish twice with cling film, making sure that all the corners are well-sealed and that no gaps are left open where air can enter.
Step 4: Foil Wrap
Step 5: Label and Freeze
