What Is A Quesadilla

A quesadilla is a Mexican dish. It is a tortilla is filled with cheese, spices of choice, meats, beans, and vegetables and cooked on a skillet. A simpler way to describe quesadillas would be a flat loaded taco!

For this recipe, we used Philly Cheesesteak inspired ingredients consisting of cubed beef, peppers, mushrooms, onions and loaded with cheese then cooked until tortilla is crispy and filling is hot.

When Were Cheesesteaks Invented

An authentic Philly cheesesteak isnt just a steak and cheese sandwich. Its the best steak and cheese sandwich, ever.

The cheesesteak was invented in Philadelphia in the 1930s, when a hotdog cart vendor named Pat Olivieri grilled some thinly-sliced beef and put it on a hotdog roll. Legend has it that a passing cab driver smelled the steak sandwich and asked to try it. Pat shared his steak with the cab driver, who loved it. And the cheesesteak was born.

Tips For The Best Quesadillas:

Though quesadillas are pretty easy to prepare, here are some tips to ensure success!

  • To Make Them Spicy- If you love spicy food, add some hot sauce or sriracha to the mayo when spreading over the tortillas.
  • Tortilla Sizes- You can use any tortilla sizes and fill with as much filling as desired. A smaller tortilla requires less filling added and will give you more quesadillas.
  • Griddle- A griddle may also be used instead of a skillet to cook the quesadillas.
  • Heat- Be sure to keep the heat at a medium. If you turn the heat up too high, the tortilla will burn and cheese wont melt.
  • Cutting tortillas- Its easiest to cut the quesadillas with a pizza cutter, though a sharp knife will also work.
  • Freezing- Quesadillas may be frozen once assembled. Fully thaw then sauté until filling is hot.
  • To reheat quesadillas cook over low heat until reheated, flipping once.

I hope this hearty loaded homemade quesadilla recipe will become a hit with the family. We love sharing new ways of enjoying the timeless flavors of Philly Cheesesteak.

What Kind Of Cheese

There are really three choices:

  • Whiz. Yes, as in Cheez Whiz. This is a huge thing here and some locals cant have a cheesesteak in Philly without whiz. Its melty and gooey and adds another layer of salty flavor.
  • Provolone. Usually regular provolone. When you start getting into sharp provolone, youve moved on to a hot roast pork or other type of sandwich. Also called Provi.
  • American. American cheese doesnt have as much flavor but it melts beautifully.
  • Personally, I am a provolone girl all the way but I respect the Cheese Whiz choice because that is how a lot of people are used to a real cheesesteak. I can also get down with American cheese but for me, nothing compares to high-quality provolone.

How Do You Make An Authentic Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich

An authentic Philly cheesesteak recipe combines the right ingredients and the right technique. Heres what to do:

  • Split a soft hoagie roll most of the way through.
  • Fry diced onions in a skillet until translucent and lightly browned.
  • Add the thinly-sliced ribeye steak. Season and cook in the pan.
  • Layer cheese on top of the steak and onions. Lay a split hoagie roll on top of the steak, then flip right side up onto a plate.
  • The Ingredients And Cooking

The main ingredient is thinly sliced steaks from various cuts of beef, with rib-eye considered the top-of-the-shelf cut. The quality of the roll is also key to a cheesesteak connoisseurs appreciation of a sandwich. Torpedo rolls, known as submarine rolls in other parts of the country, are standard, though one highly rated purveyor Donkeys, across the Delaware River in Camden puts its cheesesteaks on kaiser rolls. The crust should be firm but not teeth-crunching hard. The inside should be tender but not chewy.

The meat is sautéed on a slightly oiled grill until cooked through. Salt and pepper are standard. Onions are often cooked on the same grill but are not married with the steak until it times to put them on the roll. There are different approaches when it comes to the cheese. Cheese slices can be placed on the bread before the steak, and softened by the heat of the meat. Or they can be put on the meat on the grill for a short time before placement on the roll. Cheez Whiz is melted and drizzled over the steak in the sandwich.

Cheesesteak lovers dont always use condiments, but if they do, it is likely to be ketchup. Peppers, hot and sweet, and Sriracha also are favorites.

How To Make A Philly Cheesesteak

If you cant get to Philadelphia easily to pick up a cheesesteak sandwich, then your next best shot is to make it at home! The layout of the sandwich is simple , but the details are important. Here are a few key things to consider when making your sandwich:

    • You want your steak to be thinly sliced. If possible, you can have your butcher shave it for you. At home, you can stick the steak in the freezer for 10 minutes to make it really stiff and then shave it with your sharpest knife. Trim off any large pieces of fat, but some fat is good.
    • The original cheesesteak can be ordered with only steak or with steak and onions . Personally, I like onions and bell peppers, so I do both. You can make it your own since you are making it at home!
    • The onions and peppers need to cook much longer than the steak so cook them first, separately and then combine everything together with the cheese to finish the dish.

American cheese, deli provolone, or Cheez Whiz are the only acceptable cheese options for a real cheesesteak. I recommend white American cheese.

If you use provolone, use the soft deli kind. Avoid aged provolone, which tastes too strong and does not melt as well.
