Are cheese and crackers a healthy snack? | Herbalife Advice

7 not-so-healthy picks, plus 8 tasty alternatives.

What makes a healthy snack? A good-for-you snack is one that’s high in nutritional value but relatively low in calories, total fat, saturated fat , sugar, and sodium. And the most important part of that equation is “high in nutritional value.” Nuts, for example, are high in fat and calories, but they are also loaded with nutrients we need, which makes them a healthy choice.

On the flip side, not-so-healthy snack choices are usually low in nutritional value but high in calories, total fat, saturated fat , sugars, or sodium.

While fresh veggies and fruits make super-healthy snacks, those items aren’t always convenient . So here are some of the worst â in terms of healthfulness — snack choices I found in my local supermarket along with healthy alternatives that can be put together in minutes.

You might see different products in your part of the country. But the way to get a good idea of what’s in a food product is by looking at the first three to five ingredients listed on the package. On the Nutrition Facts label, keep an eye out for the calories, total fat, saturated and trans fat, grams of sugar, and milligrams of sodium and then compare them to other products in that category.

% Whole Grain Cheese Crackers

Homemade 100% whole wheat cheese crackers that are even better than store bought! Just blend everything together, roll out and bake.

Wheat Thins and Cheez-its have always been my favorite snacks. Healthy, right? Luckily for my health, they dont have them here. Nor do they have, in my opinion, any good snack food. But it doesnt matter any more because I have these homemade cheese crackers! These dont taste exactly like Cheez-its or Goldfish, but perhaps a cross between the two.

If you give me a bag of Cheez-its, I eat almost the entire thing and then feel sick. I do the same with these. I just cant help it. Theyre so good. If you have to share these, I definitely recommend doubling the recipe.

With all the cheese and butter, theyre not exactly healthy, but theyre way healthier than what comes out of the box, so lets celebrate!

You dont have to separate the crackers too much. They puff up just a little.

Thats my still dirty pasta cutter thingie, in case youre wondering how I made mine ruffly.

I made a pathetic zoo out of my homemade cheese crackers. Or an awesome petting zoo with elephants and gigantic killer ducks and bunnies.

Good luck with not eating the entire batch!

Private Selection Wheat Entertainment Crackers

Not all crackers are made the same. Private Selection entertainment crackers are one of those special off-brand products that is both cheaper than, and better than the name brand!

The great thing is that these crackers are healthy and taste great when dipped in Kraft Old English spread. Its similar to those snacks made for kids, except the cracker has better texture and a more complex and pleasant flavor profile.

As someone who loves entertaining, I’ve become well-acquainted with an important cornerstone of any successful soirée: the cheeseboard. I love carefully curating a selection of organic cheeses, nutritious nuts, and fresh fruit. But if there’s one element that always presents a bit of a challenge, it’s crackers.

While there are countless varieties of crackers on supermarket shelves, most of them don’t exactly meet my standards as an mbg health editor. I’m perpetually in search of cracker options that are reasonably healthy and contain ingredients I can actually get behind. Luckily, I’m here to report, they do exist.

Popsicles Made From Real Fruit Or Real Fruit Juice

Even popsicles that are made with actual fruit juice probably contain added sugars, Brown-Riggs said. Additionally, if they’re made from fruit juices, rather than fruit, they likely have very little fiber .

In looking for a better frozen treat, it’s possible to find ones that contain some whole fruit, and as a result, likely also contain a little bit of fiber, Brown-Riggs said.

But the best option is pureeing your own frozen or fresh fruit and then freezing it, which will give your snack a bit more fiber while keeping out added sugars.

Snack Foods: Healthy Or Not

Healthy eating is often a challenge, particularly when we’re surrounded by so many foods that seem to disguise themselves as good for us. We know some fats are necessary, whole grains are good, and getting adequate amounts of fruits and veggies is paramount, but sometimes the grocery store can still feel like a nutritional maze.

The best thing to do is to pick up a package and turn it around. For example, healthy snacks should be no more than 200 calories, and should have plenty of fiber, little sugar and almost no fat, Brown-Riggs said. Reading the list of ingredients, along with the nutrition label, is a good way to understand what you’re really eating, she said.

“Snacks absolutely can be included in a healthy meal plan, it just requires a little bit of thought and planning,” Brown-Riggs said.

Here are some commonly advertised “healthy” snack choices, and where they fall on the health-o-meter.

When All You Want Is Fro

“A simple, yet protein-strong pairing of plain Greek yogurt swirled with a half cup of fresh berries helps keep my hunger under control for hours. Plus, I love the light sweetness and pop of texture the berries offer without the added sugar often found in other treats.” Michelle Loy, MPH, MS, CSSD, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and owner of Go Wellness in Orange County, California

“When I need to take off a few extra pounds after too much holiday feasting or so I can fit into a not-so-forgiving dress, I make sure to have healthy snacks available at all times. If I am in the mood for something sweet, I mix five ounces of plain Greek Yogurt with a packet of Stevia, half a cup of raspberries and a tablespoon of carob chips. The mini-meal has a total of 150 calories, a whopping 15 grams of protein and at least 5 grams of fiber. It doesn’t get much better than that.” Lisa Moskovitz, R.D., founder of Manhattan-based private practice, The NY Nutrition Group

For a crispbread-like texture in cracker form, Mary’s Gone Crackers are a classic. Dietitian Rachel Fine, MS, RD, CSSD, CDN, owner of To The Pointe Nutrition says these crackers “are another favorite high-fiber option with a mix of fibrous grains and seeds.”

Sweets Enriched With Nutrients

Paleo Crackers and Cheese

There are sweets that are marketed as healthier because they include important vitamins and minerals, for example, the aptly named Who Nu Cookies. But such claims of healthiness are nothing more an advertising gimmick, Brown-Riggs said.

“People don’t eat cookies for these nutritional benefits,” she said. Indulging in a cookie should be reserved for that occasional sweet treat, not as a means for getting essential vitamins and minerals.”

In fact, it’s often better to not even indulge in these kinds of a cookie and snacks, because they send such a mixed message about their health value that people use it justify a bad snacking habit.

Instead, Brown-Riggs said, by indulging in a couple of your favorite treats every once in a while, you can leave your sweet tooth feeling satiated and under control.

No matter what term we’re in, parents are left confused about what actually constitutes a nutritionally sound snack to include in a school lunchbox.

So as both a mum and as a paediatric dietitian, here are my favourite lunchbox additions and the reasons why I choose them.

Best Gourmet: Rustic Bakery Handmade Sourdough Flatbread

Although it doesn’t meet our fiber requirements, Rustic Bakery is a dietitian-approved cracker when you’re whipping up a fancy cheese plate. “Hands down the best store-bought crackers are from Rustic Bakery. The sourdough option is my favorite because the baking involves fermentation, which attracts yeast and bacteria. These live organisms digest the complex starches in the dough. The length of time that the dough ferments is directly related to the break-down of gluten in a process called hydrolysis,” says Laura Lagano, MD, RDN, CDN, integrative & functional nutritionist with an in-person & virtual private practice. Lagano notes that fermented crackers like this can be helpful for people who are sensitive to gluten, but they’re still not best for individuals with Celiac disease.

Whole Grain Corn Chips

The most important thing to do with a bag of corn chips advertised as “whole grain” is to make sure the first ingredient listed in the ingredient list on the back is also whole grain, Brown-Riggs said.

While you’re back there, check to make sure the chips also have a bit of fiber , and make sure the sodium level, which can range from 5 milligrams per serving to 150 mg per serving, is at the lower end of that range.

If the chips meet all these criteria, they could actually be a somewhat healthy snack or at least, a healthy alternative to a standard potato chip, Brown-Riggs said.
